SecureMyWiFi Service

Powerful Security, Powerfully Cheap.

Do it yourself security like WEP and WPA-Personal doesn’t cut it in today’s world. WiTopia offers you the most powerful WLAN security available for a shockingly low annual fee. With WPA-Enterprise at its core, it’s the same security the Fortune 500 and Government spend thousands of dollars to implement and maintain.

Helps Protect you from all sorts of unpleasant things.

SecureMyWiFi™ is an Internet service. You essentially "subscribe" your wireless access points to WiTopia's hosted systems. Our secure RADIUS servers and supporting systems authenticate all attempted connections to your wireless network. Unauthorized users are immediately rejected.

The service also enables the more powerful built-in encryption capabilities of your WPA-Enterprise capable wireless access points.

For a more in-depth explanation, check out this entry on the WiTopia Blog.

Does my data ever flow through WiTopia's systems?

No. We are merely authenticating users and enabling a much stronger level of encryption and overall level of security on your wireless network. Once a user is authorized, they are allowed onto your network and all data stays local, but is now powerfully encrypted. No one, including us, can break this encryption.

Why would I use SecureMyWiFi™ versus using WEP, MAC address filtering and not broadcasting my SSID?.

If you're considering our service, you probably already realize that any 13-year-old with a few minutes and some free "hackware" can easily overcome all the above.

  • WEP security has a static key that can be broken in under a minute or two by anyone sniffing your airwaves and gathering some authentication data.
  • MAC Addresses are easily "spoofed" and can be gathered the same way so they're useless too.
  • Not broadcasting your SSID only makes it more difficult for your authorized users to connect and may actually make your WLAN a more tanalizing target to hackers. There are many free tools that show "invisible" networks.

Also, most WEP-only access points are only 802.11b (11 Mbps) capable. Even one 802.11b device or access point can slow performance down dramatically for all WLAN users even if other components are 802.11g (54 Mbps) or 802.11n capable.

What about the non-Enterprise version of WPA? Isn't that secure enough?

The Non-Enterprise version of WPA is actually reasonably secure if setup with a very long password. The lengthy password is necessary as non-enterprise WPA is susceptible to a "dictionary attack".

Still, this is really only sufficient for a home user. The single password limitation makes it very impractical, and dangerous, for most businesses.

  • Every person you wish to allow on your network, including guests, must be given the master password to your network.
  • The only way to revoke a user's access is to reset and redistribute the password for all users.
  • The password can be easily shared with unauthorized users and there is no logging of who exactly is signing onto your network.
  • Because the password must be complex, the chances it is forgotten, or written on a "sticky" in everyone's workspace, is high.

Do I really need Wi-Fi security or is this issue over-hyped?

Admittedly, it is a bit over-hyped, but it does happen. A lot. Usually, the perpetrator only wants a little free Internet access, but there's no reason to potentially bet your business on the kindness of strangers. Also, since we're talking about customer data here, it may be illegal, or expose you to huge liability, not to protect it.

Here's some of the things that can happen with weak security:

  • Unauthorized use of your Internet connection
  • Illegal (or at least unsavory) content being downloaded using your Internet address
  • Theft of proprietary business and customer information
  • Use of your network to launch SPAM, Viruses, Worms, and other attacks
  • E-mail and IM being read
  • Stolen Passwords
  • Wireless network can be a "back door" to other systems

What's involved in set up?

Once purchased, registration and the one-time setup for a single access point should take about 10-15 minutes. Each additional AP takes only about 5 minutes as they're just "wash, rinse, repeat."

What happens if we wish to move an access point?

Any SecureMyWiFi™ - enabled WAP can be moved and plugged into any Internet connection worldwide where it will re-authenticate in seconds. This is great for travelers, office moves, or setting up multiple permanent or temporary locations with ease.

What about branch offices?

Plug and Play and roaming for users is built-in. They can sign onto any network for which they are authorized.

How do I manage my network and its users?

Via your secure web portal, you can manage all your SecureMyWiFi™ network locations and users 24x7x365. You can add or delete a user or location in real-time from anywhere. All you need is a connection to the Internet.

What Operating Systems work with SecureMYWiFi™ ?

Any device with an 802.1x or WPA-Enterprise client should work. Windows 2000, XP, and Vista are fine. Macintosh 10.3 and later are good to go. Linux shouldn't be an issue, either. Mixed environments are no problem.

Do I need an "IT Guy" to figure this out? Do I need any hardware or software?

Nope. No setting up a RADIUS server. No certificate management, key management, or other complexities to deal with. No knowledge of WEP, MAC Filtering, 802.1x, 802.11i, AES, PEAP, LEAP, TKIP, MSCHAPV2 necessary.

We've already done all that for you. If you ever have a problem, just e-mail support@witopia.net for a quick response 24x7x365.

What type of Access points can I use?

Any 802.1x, 802.11i, WPA-Enterprise, or WPA2-Enterprise capable Wi-Fi AP should work. Our friends at the Wi-Fi Alliance keep a pretty good searchable list here.

Still, we'd be remiss if we didn't tell you that some of them need a tweak here or there. It seems not all manufacturers adhere strictly to security standards or are even consistent model to model.

Point is, if it doesn't work right away, check our WiTopia Help Wiki or e-mail support@witopia.net and we'll get it worked out.

What if I lose my Internet connection?

On our side, redundant Unix-based systems hosted in hardened data facilities with uninterruptible power and gobs of bandwidth mean high performance, unmatched scalability, and 24x7x365 availability.

But, yes, a prolonged Internet outage on your side could cause users to be unable to authenticate to your wireless network until Internet was restored. Of course, in practical reality, if your Internet is down, there's usually not much use for a WLAN anyways. Once connectivity is restored all WAPs will reauthenticate to WiTopia's systems automatically.

Is there any limit to size of network, number of locations, or number of users I can secure and manage with SecureMyWiFi™?

Nope. We just built a standard online package for what we felt were most standard applications. E-mail sales@witopia.net for special pricing for whatever you need.

What if I don't like it? Is there a free trial?

We "usually" do not offer free trials. However, if you are unsatisfied for any reason, whatsoever, e-mail sales@witopia.net within first 30 days of service for a full refund.
